Cooking tip

June 13, 2007

Reminder to self:

Never treat vermicelli as if it is pasta.

Today, Chef Pavan tried “semiya upma” by microwaving vermicelli in water (like Pasta in water bath). The final product turned out to be like paste, which could be used to stick posters on walls.

Without looking on the internet, it was doomed to be a disaster. Damn you Bambino!

PS: I didnt have the patience to fry them.

Next time around add oil and keep it for a shorter duration. Its so thin that it gets cooked in a jiffy unlike pasta.

BTW which pasta did you have in mind …penne .. the slowest of all? I tried to resist this comment but it was too much for me.

  2. Srikanth Says:

Next time, do the same, and apply for a patent for this new product as “herbal adhesive”
sell this patent to some one like 3M, and make some good money.

  3. Pavan Says:

Cinamon, yes, I should have gone the oil-route, but desperation called for that way of cooking.. I visualized Macaroni while cooking vermicelli 🙂

Srikanth, good idea 🙂 actually it reminds me of my school teacher telling that the local ‘rice-paste adhesive’ used in India for posters is mixed with CuS04 to make it unfit for consumption (as ‘ganji’)

  4. Cinamon Says:

Pavan… rofl Ganji means vest or baniyan in hindi. Kanji is the rice preperation.

Vermicelli and macaroni — Both are sold by Bambino, no wonders you got confused. :).
